Losing emails

I am running Outlook 2002, on Windows XP SP2,
something weird has started happening,
when I open an email and then close it, I cannot see it anywhere, it
is not in my deleted or spam folders.

Can someone give me some advice on how to fix this please

Change your View setting to all messages, not just unread messages.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
