losing emails during archive operation

background: users have outlook 2003, exchange2003, XP SP2.

When a user has a pst file that is corrupt, and autoarchiving turned on, the
emails that should go to the archive just disappear, without notice that
there is something wrong. Now before you tell me to run scanpst understand
that the archive has been corrupt for several months and I only have a 30
days retention in backups.

Question: Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Users have months
of lost email because they didnt know that the archive was corrupt and
assumed that the missing mail from thier inbox was properly archived. Since
I only have 30 days of backups for the pst's and the exchange server the user
is out alot of mail.

I have run scanpst's until I'm blue in the face, and tried the recover
deleted items to no avail. I understand the mail is probably gone, but how
to prevent?

First step into prevention is preventing to get the pst-file to get corrupt.
The main cause of corruption is by connecting to a pst-file that is stored
on a network share. This is an unsupported configuration.

Since you are running Exchange you might want to consider server side
archiving instead of client level archiving. This will save you the hassle
of going through individual pst-files and have more centralized management.

You are correct, but I dont make the rules. So, where does the email go? And
how do I keep this from happening - short of killing the exchange admin and
changing to server side archiving. Bit wait wouldnt that be network side?

In general you would receive an error if archiving fails due to corruption
and the messages won't be moved. You might want to doublecheck if they are
actually archiving to or troubleshooting the right file. Are you keeping the
pst-files locally on the clients?
