Loose network workgroup access with XP firewall activated

I changed my settings to activate the built in firewall in WINXP home and found that my connection to my office workgroup was lost. As soon as I deactivated the firewall, I had access again. Do I need to change another setting to maintain the firewall and still have access to the workgroup? Thank you for inforamtion regarding this issue.

What "connection" is being lost? For instance, turning on the firewall will
prevent other machines on the workgroup to access file and printer shares.

The "connection" I loose is to the other computers in the network. I have since turned off the firewall and find that I get the "workgroup" computers to show in my network. Since the computers on on a network via a router with a firewall anyway, should I just leave the XP firewall off? Thanks.
