I am looking for a program that will add to the Windows' Open and Save
dialog box some sort of functionality where I can get a list of diretories
or files that I use most often.

I use Dialog Box Assistant. It's now shareware, but you can get the last
freeware version at:

I used Dialog Box Assistant for quite a while myself, and liked it
somewhat. I don't remember why anymore, but I switched to Dirkey a while
back and have been happy ever since.

Oh, I think I remember why now. Dirkey works in explorer windows too, not
just open and save dialog boxes.

TweakUI for Windows XP will let you designate 5 custom folders for the
Places Bar under Common Dialogs. Don't remember if TweakUI for earlier
versions of Windows had this option.

I use Folder View from http://www.folderview.com/.

It puts a button on the Save As dialog which contains recently
visited folder. Optionally it can change the big buttons on the left
of the Save As window to refer to recently used folders.
