Looking for a way to Shockproof my external HDD.

Looking for a way to Shockproof my external HDD. I was considering
using a sorbothane sheet on the outside. I was also contemplating. I
have also heard of people using polymer bushings for other
applications...?

Really depends on what you mean by shock proofing.

If you want to be able to drop it onto a concrete floor from a height of 10'
when running without any damage at all, thats a very different matter to just
being able to move it from one place to another in a container of some kind.

It you want to stop it being knocked over or being knocked off the table,
that can be done in various ways.

Its a lot easier to ensure that it cant drop off the table.

Its very difficult to shockproof a 3.5" drive so it can
be dropped off the table when running with impunity.

First of all, you need to know what your threat is. Then, it this
a 3.5" or 2.5" HDD? Heavily used or not? Heat is a consideration,
but typically uncritical for 2.5" and typically problematic for
3.5".

Personally, I have one 2.5" HDD in a paded pouch made for this,
I think by LaChie. Works well. There was also a hard-case that
did not have sufficient padding on the sides.

There are lots of options, but one size does not fit all.

Go mechanical engineering newsgroup! :)

You will need a shock sensor that looks like the labyrinth in your ear.

Buy a very thick carpet? Get one of these Japanese tables with

Put the drive n the floor to start with, stupid.
Ask yourself /why/ you want to drop the hard disk off the table in the first place. If you can't think of a good
reason, then don't do it.
There is /no/ good way to shockproof a normal hard disk against a drop
like this, except perhaps to wrap it in so many layers of bubblewrap that it is the size of a beach ball, and you'll
want to keep it on the floor anyway.

Told you so.

Thats sorta the way they dropped the rovers onto mars years back isnt it? A
huge ball, that bounced on entry and the opened up to allow the rover to roam?

Have you considered using an SSD? They're shockproof by their design,
outside of the possibility of cracking the casing and circuitry.

http://iosafe.com/products-rugged-portable-SSD-overview is supposedly
rated for falls of 20', 5,000lbs of crushing force, and/or 30' of water,
and apparently the latest generation is USB 3.0 (despite the web site
only mentioning 2.0)

Perhaps they're clumsy and after having dropped several drives that
distance in the past, they want a drive that can handle the abuse?

Not very practical for a hard drive.

It makes more sense to package it properly and put it on the floor right from
the start, where it cant be kicked.

I know, buts its cool NASA landed the rover in this fashion. Kinda old school.

How about RDX?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RDX_Technology

I'm currently looking into a networked RDX drive for a client, who
constantly transfers HUGE (> 100GB) files to and from their remote offices.
Right now they're using external 2.5" USB2 drives formatted to exFAT.
