Dude

Hey all,

I'm looking to make a incomming fax server that will have two or more
modems in it. Can anyone recomend anything worth using thats freeware /
open source? Otherwise I guess I'll just go with Winfax 10.0.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi dude!
I use rightfax (SNIP), f-work cool, but it's not free! All the best!

If it's not free, then why are you recommending it here in
alt.comp.freeware? This group is supposed to be for the discussion of
freeware, not commercial programs.

Please try to stay on topic.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett, Doc (who uses sock puppets)
or Roger Johansson, for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial
software, crippleware, demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware,
spyware, time-limited software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

Chris,
What version of Windows are you using?

It's XP Pro...

And I guess the built in XP FAX service won't meet your needs:

http://channels.lockergnome.com/win...iguring_the_xp_fax_component_xp_prohome.phtml

(link may wrap)

Right, it looks like although you can select which modem you want to
use, it won't monitor both at once. Wow, that is a tough one.

Only option out there is pretty much Callcenter:

http://www.v3inc.com/freecc.htm

but since I haven't used it, I don't know if it will do this. I also
don't know if the free version is simply liteware or is lacking enough
vital features to make it crippleware. Maybe somebody else can clarify
this issue.

Other than that, I've looked and I'm afraid I can't find anything else
that might meet your needs. Maybe somebody else will have better luck.

Sorry, wish I could have been of more help.

If you're still open, try *nix. It's much more vigorous in its modem
handling - a modem is just a modem to it. Software can be written to
answer any ringing modem, or to use any available modem for an
outgoing call.

I installed CC to my grief several year's ago. It had an extremely
sloppy
installation with files spread all over my HD. I quickly uninstalled
it. suggest you look for a better fax program - something with a
clean install/uninstall. (do a google search in this NG for my posting
on cc.) regards, He2

I went through this evaluation process once and decided not to
get incoming faxes with my machine but to use an incoming fax
service and get my faxes by email. I get a text message on my
cellular phone telling me that a fax came in.

I use ringcentral.

I understand that it answers all calls and does not give busy
signals. That would address your need for multiple lines and
paying for them.

I have been happy with this arrangement.

Thanks for your feedback, but from what I've seen of FAX programs,
commercial or otherwise, such messy installations are common. So (in
answer to Paul_B) is initially calling home to verify that the program
works (although this step is usually initiated at the user's
discretion). Since I always use Total Uninstall to monitor program
installations, completely and thoroughly removing such a progam, if I
don't like it, is never a problem.

Perhaps more to the point are the following questions:

1. Does the program actually work?
2. Is the output received of good quality?
3. Are the features which are limited of enough importance to cripple
the program?
3. In the case of the OP, can the program monitor two fax/modems?

my experiences with Total Uninstall in the pasture and now using
Ashampoo Uninstaller: No program uninstalls 100% especially with big
installations. Next time you have uninstalled a bigger program have a
look into the registry searching keywords and/or visit some windows
subdirectories. You will be estonished.

It depends on how long a person runs a program before removing it. If
you have it on your system for a long time, some programs can definitely
clutter up your registry. However, I always try to run the program once
after the installation is over and before telling Total Uninstall to do
the second scan. That ensures listing of additional registry entries is
more complete. You're right in that no uninstaller does a perfect job
every time but using one is better than not using one. 80)>
