fax scanner issue

Since losing Symantec's Winfax, I am having trouble replacing it with it's
original
counterpart, WinFax Lite. When trying to either scan a document to my fax
modem,
or saving it to disk, WinFax Lite will not accept it. The Epson scanner only
seems to
put out documents of jpg, bit map, etc., but not fax. Somehow the Symantec
Winfax program was able to talk to the scanner and pull in documents as
attachments. I think some fax programs set up dummy printer abilities that will
take
a scanned document and output it as a fax. My two choices are to find a fax
program (preferably freeware) that will do that, or a conversion program that
will
take these image files from the scanner and convert them to a fax format. Any
suggestions?

Windows XP itself has a fax utility; it is not loaded or installed by
default, but it comes with Windows XP. You have to go to Control Panel
/ Add remove software / Windows Components to load it. Try that.

Well, I'm not sure then that I understand the "loss" of Winfax Pro. I
have WinFax Pro 10.03 on my computer as a download I got from Symantec
several years ago, it's a 75 megabyte zip file and it still installs and
runs, but it is somewhat flakey under XP .... it worked better under
98SE, actually, and probably under Windows 2000 as well.

But honestly, it's time to upgrade to XP.

And I should also add that I have an update patch from 10.03 to 10.04,
also from Symantec.

Barry,

I lost Winfax Pro when I couldn't load Symantec System Works anymore. Trying to

load just the Winfax element on the install disk did not work either. I'm not
sure when you downloaded WinFax Pro from Symantec, but I don't think it is
available
from them anymore.

I have stuck with Windows 2000 mainly because I like the control it gives me.
Too
many automatic things in XP. I also dislike Microsoft's licensing policy with
XP.
There is mostly nothing in XP that I can't get as third party else where for my
Windows 2000. I may wind up buying a stand alone Fax program.

Thanks for your help,

Sherwin

Barry,

By some miracle, I was able to install Winfax off my Symantec System Works disc
as a single program under System Works. It seems to work.
