Hotmail Popper is now trialware. "The trial is fully functional but
will expire after you upload and download 100 messages. If you choose to
purchase Hotmail Popper, the cost is $17.50." No thanks. It was free
but now at version 3 the author has decided to make money on it. I use
YahooPOPs to access my Yahoo accounts and would like to find a
replacement for Hotmail Popper that is also just as free.
Yeah, I know Outlook and Outlook Express let you define HTTP accounts to
access Hotmail. I don't want to use that "feature" because of problems
with it, which include:
- Won't officially support more than one HTTP account (i.e., Hotmail) in
Outlook per mail profile. I don't want to define multiple mail profiles
and have to select which profile to use on startup of Outlook. I have
more than one Hotmail account.
- Waiting for the connect and poll for Hotmail can, at times, severely
slow down the load of Outlook.
- Hotmail gets its own information store (i.e., .pst file). All POP3
accounts gets aggregated into the Inbox. HTTP accounts get their own
separate info store so they appear as a separate folder. I'm not going
to bother with dragging my e-mails around to different folder. I really
don't want separate information stores, one for all POP3 accounts and
another for an HTTP account.
With Hotmail Popper, I could define a POP3 account in Outlook (or
Outlook Express) for Hotmail. It connected to SpamPal for spam
detection which then connected to Hotmail Popper to access my Hotmail
account. Because it was defined as a POP3 account in Outlook, my
e-mails in Hotmail got aggregated into the Inbox along with my other
POP3 accounts.
I had not used my Hotmail account in a long time but it was still
active. It is set to Exclusive mode so only known senders (folks in my
address book) will have their e-mails retained. Unless whitelisted,
e-mail from others get moved into the Junk folder where they get deleted
after a week. I decided to subscribe to some of Microsoft's newsletters
but want them delivered to my Hotmail account. This means that I might
have to whitelist them if the Exclusive mode filter doesn't recognize
they are sent from Microsoft. I don't want to have to periodically and
manually poll my Hotmail account to see when these newsletters arrive.
I will NOT install MSN Messenger which has been thoroughly eradicated
from my system.
I figured to go back to using Hotmail Popper but now that author has
apparently completed his covert usage of his users as involuntary beta
testers and wants to start collecting money on this product. So now I'm
looking for a free replacement that either operates as an HTTP-to-POP3
protocol converter, like YahooPOPs, or uses WebDAV to get at my Hotmail
e-mails.
