Hi,
I'm running W2000 with service pack 4 on a laptop. P4 2,4 with 512 mb
ddr ram, 40 gb HDD, SIS graphics card and DVD CDRW combo. The machine is
setup to operate standalone. Company policy prevents use of the same machine
on the internet and company wan. Initially the PC was set up for company
network and was subsequently changed. The two domains were removed. I am the
administrator of the PC. I have set it up so that it does not require a
password and logons on to local machine automatically. So far all well.

My problem is that when starting up the PC stops at a screen (Blue
border, Grey background) Headed Important Notice. Do not attempt to log on
unless you are a registered user. The PC then waits until OK button is
pressed and then continues booting. As this rather obviates my requirement
for an unattended logon can some one suggest how I can get rid of this
screen. I cannot find any reference to it in Logon scriptfiles etc. I have
tried Poledit, GPedit etc. I have done a search for the text in the file,
checked start-up files etc. PC works just fine but would like to be able to
just switch it on and let it start-up automatically instead of having to
press OK before start-up continues.

Can anyone suggest a way of stopping the file from executing on start-up
Many Thanks and Merry Xmas

Try checking your Local Security Settings.

Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Local Security
Policy

Click on Local Policies | Security Options and look
for "Message test for users attempting to logon" and
disable it.

That *should* be your problem.

Empty the Reg_Sz strings found at;
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system

Thanks I tried that and find that there is no message enabled. It does
however say that if a group policy is enabled it will over ride the local
policy. Is this perhaps the problem
Thanks for quick response

Thanks tried that and found that registry string was empty. Any other
suggestions

Then it must be initiated *after* the logon. Start\Settings\Control
Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management(Local)\System
Information\Software Environment\Startup Programs|View|Advanced, then in the
"Location" column, you'll find the path to the "Startup" location either in
the "Startup" directories or from the registry's "Run" keys.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

If a group policy is affecting the machine, you should
have 2 columns in this section of the Local Security
Settings (Local Setting and Effective Setting). If such a
thing exists, you need to check both of those(they should
be side-by-side, make sure you turn on Details view to see
everything).
