I have a VPN connection I use when I take my laptop home.
When I log onto my computer, I am putting in the password
for my company's domain, but I am not connected to the VPN
until the computer boots so it takes forever to boot - I
am assuming it is trying to authenticate my password but
it cannot find the server needed to authenticate me. Is
there any way to have a VPN connection automatically
started at boot time, prior to authenticating the password?

This is a question for your company network support people to deal with.

How long does it take? If you unplug the computer from your home Internet
connection, how long does it take then?

This is a feature of your VPN software, which you didn't name. Most VPN
clients can be configured to load before the user logs on, so that they can
connect to the VPN first. Check with your company's Help Desk.

When I unplug the computer from the connection, the logon
is very fast (under 30 seconds). When I have it plugged
in, it takes about 3 minutes.
