Logon to desktop immediately logs me out

Matt Miller

I think I deleted a logon related file when cleaning some
spyware junk off my machine running XP professional.

Now, my username appears, I login with the password, my
desktop flashes on ,then I am returned to the logon screen.

Reloading windows from the CD did not fix the problem.

I need help.

thanks in advance!

Hi Matt,

Which spyware cleaner(s) did you use or was this manual edits? In the
meantime, see if this applies:

It was manual edits.

I enabled a feature in Norton INternet security that
alerts me when a program spawns another program.

then launched IE, which (after it was too late) I
determined launched alot of system files that I delted one
by one.

Thanks for the feedback, Matt. If a system restore doesn't help, nor the
article, nor SFC /Scannow, you may have to revert to a repair install. Good
luck with it all.

Thanks. This tipped me off to remembering the file that I
deleted "userinit.exe"

I booted directly from the WinXP CD, and went into
recovery console.

copied userinit.ex_ from the \I386 directory on the WinXP
CD to C:\windows\system32.

then rename userini.ex_ to userinit.exe

PROBLEM SOLVED.
