logon system process

I have a laptop with xp pro. Not sure of when it was working last or what
has been done to cause the problem.
I can start the computer into windows and login. The login page is the old
style where I have to put in a name and password. I have tried with the name
that it defaults to and with administrator. Both lead to loading personal
settings and bring up the desktop picture without anything else, no taskbar
or icons. No indication that anything else has loaded.
I booted into safe mode and went through the same process with the same user
names. But in safe mode I get a box titled Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime
Library that read:
Runtime Error!
Program \??\C:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

It only has an ok button. When I click ok I get a blue screen with:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0x00000003 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

I have tried doing the last known good configuration with no luck. I have
tried to do a repair install using the xp pro cd, but I get an error and it
kicks me out of the setup while loading files.

Any ideas on where to start?

I see that the first link is for windows 2000. Is it possible that this
could be the same issue on XP Pro?

Yes it's possible to be the same issue, though I can't say for sure.
Someone else has posted with this problem after you. They correlated it
with the recent windows updates. No fix there yet. They are going to try
a repair install.
