Hello, my computer starts up fine as it usually does
untill the Windows XP (Home Edtion, SP1) user logon screen
comes up. when it gets there it freezes. the backround
picture loads, but it looks like it is being viewed in 12
bit colour. No user names/icons appear but the mouse
pointer is visable and i can move it but theres nothing to
click on. Alt Ctrl Del does nothing. I have tried all the
options in the F5 startup menue but all have the same
problem. I have no clue what is causing this or how to fix
it so any informatin would be great!

thanks, John.

The only thing I can suggest is to make sure no devices
are plugged into the system such as a scanner etc.

Try doing a XP repair from the XP CD, you may need to
aaccess the bios and set the boot order to boot from the
CD ROM drive first.

Can you get into Safe Mode (hit F8 while the computer is starting)? Try
this and 1) run msconfig to prepare for a clean boot; 2) look in Event
Viewer for clues. Post back with more information for more help.
