logon password

I booted my laptop this morning and it asked me for a logon password. I have
never had a password set and no-one has had access to add a password. I've
tried the Administrator ID and that now has a password as well.

The only change to my system was a automatic Windows update yesterday.

Is this a problem with the Windows update, or the result of a virus or trojan?

Is there any way around this short of a clean re-install?

Probably malware. This has cropped up a few times actually.
