Logon - immediate logoff

My Win XP Pro system just started this: At the login screen, you
select a user, and type in the password. The desktop appears for a
brief moment and you get the message 'saving your settings' and it logs
out. Safe mode works OK. I tried the following:

1. Ad Aware issue with the BlazeFind malware: checked it out; not the
problem.
2. Known issue with Nvidia video drivers causing this problem. Generic
SVGA driver behaves the same way.
3. I did a repair re-install of Windows; no help.
4. I have firewall; anti-spy and anti-virus progams all come up clean.
On line scan (from pcpitstop.com) only found a few cookies, which I
deleted manually.

I'm stuck using my laptop until I can resolve this problem. Any ideas
would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Does it eventually shut off?

Any chance that you ever had a battery backup connected to this computer?

Noozer,
Thanks for the reply. When it logs off, it just goes back to the
logon screen with the user icons on the CRT; it doesn't shut off by
itself. All other behavior (in safe mode for example) looks just fine.
And no, I never had a UPS connected to this unit.
