logon Fails

A Windows XP pro wants to share his Dell Laptop with an assoicate.

So we have created a limited user account for this person.

When we click on the user on the welcome screen and type in the
password, we get a message the loading personal settings and then we
get the welcome screen agin.

How do we fix this?

thanks

Would these links work if the original user can still log in?

Nope. If the Userinit value is incorrect, none of the users can login.

If this problem is occurring for a particular user account, then it's a good
idea to inspect the Event Logs for any clue. More information on checking
the event log is available in the following thread, answered by Gerry
Cornell.

Thanks for the reply. I finally got an error messasge

windows cannot log on because your profile cannot be loaded. check
that you are connected to the network, or that your network is
functioning correctly. if this problem persists, contacte your network
administrator

I have look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Since the user isn't in the hive, I can't copy if.

I look here:
in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and the user wasn't created.

David,

This is a generic error message as far as I can see. Have you checked the
event logs? Also, verifying the Permissions for the C:\Documents and
Settings\Default User would be a good idea I think.
