Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse crashes Windows XP Professional

I got a Logitech USB Cordless Optical Desktop plugged into a Dell Inspiron
5150. Normally, the laptop runs Linux and everything works fine. For a
current project I am working under Windows XP Professional. Now I experience
severe problems with the mouse. Several times a day the mouse pointer stops
moving, and after a few seconds, either it works again, or, more often,
Windows crashes completely and the machine reboots. I have asked Logitech
technical support, but all they had to offer was to suggest something might
be wrong with the USB hardware.
Now I know for sure that the hardware is Ok, because if I switch over to
Linux I never get any failures from USB or the mouse.
I must say that I am quite annoyed with this. The last time I was working on
a Windows-based project with the same hardware configuration and the same
mouse about a year ago I only very seldomly got these problems. A few days
ago I installed Kaspersky antivirus and had to remove it immediately, because
somehow it lead to the crash happening once every hour or so, maybe by adding
to the system load influencing some timing problem. The log files show
nothing special.
The OS is automatically updated, so it should be a current version of all
drivers.

Now my question is: Has anybody recently experienced similar effects on Dell
Inspiron Laptops or different hardware? How do I fix this? I really can't go
on with this, loosing work every day. I thought, that was the "Professional"
all about...

You don't suppose you have a virus or spyware, do you?

No. I don't use Outlook, I don't use IE, and Kaspersky managed a full system
scan while I was away and did not use the mouse for that time. The problem is
reproducable if I continue dragging some scrollbar for a considerable amount
of time. Holding the mouse button pressed seems to "help" producing the
effect.
As a workaround, I have disconnected the mouse only and use the cordless
keyboard with the laptops touchpad (yuck). Deinstalling Logitec MouseWare and
using MS USB HID drivers only changes nothing.
