With Windows 98SE I start the computer, leave to do something else,
and then return a few minutes later to the desktop, which is ready to
go. But with my new notebook using XP, I power up, then have to wait
to click on the administrator name. I'm the only one using the
computer. Is there a way to bypass the administrator login and get to
the desktop just as with Windows 98SE?

Hi

Try this:

From Start>Run type

control userpasswords2

then uncheck 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' and click 'Apply'. On the next screen - 'Automatically Log On' - delete the name 'Administrator' from the User name box and enter your account name and then the password in the next two boxes. OK your way out and then reboot your system.

If your problem is with the screen saver/monitor powerdown
managment, then right click the Desktop, select
Properties, Screen Saver Tab, uncheck the "On Resume,...
(either Password Protect or Show Welcome Screen" box.
