The simplest way to not show unread email messages on the
Welcome screen is to download, install and run TweakUI from
Microsoft. Once you've installed TweakUI, go to Start -> All
Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP and launch the program.
Click the + sign next to Logon. Click on Unread Mail. Make the
appropriate changes in the right hand pane. Click OK. Restart
your compute to see if you get the desired results.

Take a look at these articles for more information.

Hi

You can get rid of that message:

Download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and
when installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go
to Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail message can be disabled via the Registry -
navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Youremailaddress]
- double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane - and change
the value to 0(Zero).
