I created a new password for XP and forgot it. I started
my computer up in safe mode and am able to select the
administrator account to login to, but it requires a
password...which i do not have. Is there a default
password or any way I can get in without having to
reformat my hard drive? (I do not have a password
restart disk) thanks!

if it's xp pro you'll need to get ahold of a password reset disk: i've used this personally on windows 2000 machines: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html. it's a linux kernel on a bootable floppy disk, it lets you edit an ntfs drive, and hence the password hash on the machine
