hi there,

i have just upgraded a windows ME laptop to windows 2000.

i set all passwords to 'password' during the process.

when i try to login now, it accepts the username and
password and looks as though it will login, but after a
few seconds the login box appears again.

this just keeps looping no matter which user logs in
(including the administrator)

please help !!

Windows 2000 was released first, Windows ME came
later. There is no "upgrade" path from Windows ME
back to Windows 2000. Your best bet is to back up
your data, then do a clean installation of Windows 2000.

many thanks for your reply.

when i say 'upgraded to 2000' i assume that we all know
that ME was a load of pants and 2000 is a much more robust
and reliable system.

I have a problem with a clean install as my machine does
not have a floppy or cd drive that it will boot from,
hence my question.

thanks

Why not buy a floppy disk drive and a CD drive so that
you can boot from them? They are very cheap! In its
current state your machine is living on borrowed time -
sooner or later you will be forced to boot from something
other than the hard disk!

hi there,

i do have a floppy and cd-rom, but i cannot boot from
them. Floppy is a usb and cd-rom is pc-slot, neither of
which have boot options within the bios.

The machine isn't mine and i can't say whether my friend
wants to buy new equipment for it

thanks,

If you're willing to do a clean installation of Win2000, here is
how you can do it:

1. Install the hard disk as the primary master disk in some
other PC. Disconnect all other disks.
2. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com.
3. Use fdisk.exe to remove & recreate the primary partition.
You will be limited to 32 GBytes.
4. Format the hard disk with the /s switch.
5. Copy all the files from a: to c:, include the DOS subdirectory.
6. Change every reference in c:\config.sys and c:\autoexec.bat
from a:\ to c:\.
7. Reboot the machine off the hard disk. I must now recognise
the CD drive.
8. If successful, put the disk back into your friend's PC, and
reboot it. It should recognise the CD drive.
9. Pop in your Win2000 CD and execute these commands:
d:
cd \i386
winnt
The Win2000 installation will now start.
10. When finished, convert drive C: to NTFS if desired.

i do have another Dell laptop, but the harddrives are not
compatible and therefore i cannot put the one in need of
formatting into another machine.

thanks for the help though
