Is there any way to use my laptop without having to enter
a password? It's a used laptop given to me as a gift. It
apparently belonged to someone named Roger, because thats
the name the computer is registered to. When I first
received the computer, it would boot directly to the
desktop, bypassing the Welcome Screen. I did something
and all of a sudden, I was getting the Welcome Screen
asking for a pswd. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks in advance.

There's different approaches to this problem, including reinstalling XP or using a commercial password recovery, or booting from a linux floppy and deleting the SAM hive. The most common password is the owners name, Roger in your case. Also common would be "password" or "Password", you can try those. Sometimes people don't password the default Administrator account. It shows up if you boot Safe Mode and sometimes if you hit Cntrl-Alt-Del at the Welcome screen (You have to type in "Administrator" if the popup window shows up). Either way if you get in go to the Control Panel, click on Users and create a new account for yourself.

My desire is to power up and go directly to desktop. I'm
sure this is possible because it was doing this before I
started exploring and making blind changes. I just don't
know how to get that back. Thanks,
