Logging on to Windows XP

My home computer came with Windows XP SP1 already
installed.
I have had it for over a year. Just recently, when I boot
up XP, it takes me to the Welcome screen.
When I click on my user account and type in my password,
it pauses for a second, flashes desktop and then goes
right back to the Welcome screen. The process repeats no
matter what I try; even when trying to boot in SafeMode
and Booting with last known good Configuration. As a
result, I can't get access.

Did you run a spyware removal program lately? The userinit value may have
been corrupted by the removal of blazefind. It adds wsaupdater.exe to the
logon value in the system registry, sometimes appending it, sometimes
replacing it. Running Adaware or other cleaners detects and removes
wsaupdater.exe, but doesn't correct the registry damage. If this is the
case, then you may need to load the registry hive from another installation
and change it. This is the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

On the damaged installations it's one of these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

Another "quickie" method of resolution is to load the Recovery Console (see
below), copy userinit.exe as wsaupdater.exe from the command prompt, then
restart normally. Once in, go and change the registry value back to what
it's supposed to be and delete the copied file.

This can also be done by using the 6 disk boot floppy set mentioned in the
above article, as it loads enough of the Recovery Console so that you can
copy the file. This is particularly useful if you have an OEM installation
that includes only a Restore CD, or no disk at all.

I have the same problem. Have you found a solution? We
never set up the computer to log in with a password, but
now it starts up at that welcome screen, and when you
click on the user name, it just logs off back to welcome
screen. What did you do?

Yes, I ran AD-Adware SE Plus. Thanks for the solution.
Now I just need someone to provide step-by-step
instructions on loading the registry hive and/or loading
the Recovery Console. I'm not a computer techie....just a
simple user. (smile)

Hey all,
I've been having the same problem. I managed to sort it out
by creating the 6 boot disks to run, then running the
recovery console, and copying userinit.exe to
wsaupdater.exe. Worked a charm. I hope you all can get
through it too! Just follow the guide from these links:
