Logging in

Suddenly on my windows 2000 professional workstation, when I try to log in, I
receive the standard: "Applying network settings" which looks great; but then
it quickly states "Saving your settings" and returns back to the CTRL-ALT-DEL
login screen. The computer doesn't reboot itself, but it won't allow me in
to the desktop. I am able to map a drive to C$ and D$ and ran anti-virus
scans and also ran a spy sweep. The spysweep found a lot of entries, but it
cleaned them all out. The virus scan only found gain adware and it
quarantined it. I rebooted the box, and it still doesn't allow me into the
desktop. I opened up the services applet on my machine, and connected to the
services on the machine giving me trouble, and all of my services seem to
have started. The event log entries I see are in the system log, and they
point to the NetBios over TCP/IP service as not starting (but it is started).
The other errors I see in the system log are for failed services that are
dependencies of the NetBios over TCP service. And all of those services
appear to have been started as well. Finally, I did try safe mode, and when
I entered the local admin password, it did the same thing it's been
doing..."Applying my settings" but then I get booted out, and back to the
CTRL-ALT-DEL login screen. Has anyone seen this? I appreciate any info that
anyone can share.

This sounds like one of two things; the drive letter has change from
original install, or the drive permissions have changed.
