Logged off immediately after logging on

I have Windows XP Home PC that logs off as soon as I log on. It does this with all users even in Safe mode. I read another newsgroup thread that refers to making a change in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\Userinit:Reg_SZ:C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe. I tried to connect to the registry from the registry editor of a WinXP Pro computer and I keep getting authentication failures. I have both machines on the same workgroup but I can't even map a drive to the XP Home machine let alone get to the registry. I even tried to map to the ICS$ share first.

HELP!

See if the last method helps:

(Assuming wsaupdater.exe)
The disadvantage here is one cannot ascertain the current userinit value.

For the authentication issue, you may try in XP Networking newsgroup.

I have a similar problem and from looking at this thread, I cannot determine
the fix.

I upgraded from 2000 Pro to XP pro. If an existing user account is
accessed, the user can log into and access the computer with the exception of
the printer. In order for users to access the printer, I must change them to
administrator level. I can however get acees to the printer through the
command prompt screen.

If I try and create a new user account, they are logged off immediately
after logging in. I feel thses problems are related and since I found this
thread discussion, I was hoping the answer is here.

Thanks
