Log-off error msgs post XP SP3 installation

After installing XP SP3 I now have probs with log-off. Two "programs still
running" messages appear: SMax4PNP and sprtcmd.exe

I've tried to uninstall the Soundmax file (via remove programs) and access
is denied.

I'm hesitant to remove the sprtcmd.exe because it's related to Microsoft
support services? It's a file in c:\Program Files\Analog Devices.

Help! This prob means logging off means hanging around to "end now" 2X each
time.

Install the latest sound card and modem drivers for your computer.

In all likelihood, SP3 only revealed that your sound software has problems.
Now, before shutting down, stop the processes above. By the time the logout
screen appears, you may not be able to get the stop command entered.
You can always turn the computer off. Windows XP is quite a bit more
resilient with respect to such an act than any version of Windows 9x. Bad
things can still happen, but desperate people have no choice but to do this.
Then, on reboot, first check to see if the processes are running. If they
are, stop them.
Now, see if you can remove the programs.
Reboot after a successful uninstall.
Finally, then, you need to install the latest version of the programs which
you get from the vendor.
Verify that this version of the programs is compatible with SP3.

Also, you will not find any of Microsoft support services programs, etc., in
a folder called \Program Files\Analog Devices. These things will be located
in folders which leave no doubt about the ownership of the files.

Looks like Soundmax offers an update for a fee. Other sites offer free
downloads but are probably bogus.

Amazing that an update requires spending more money - shouldn't be that
way. I have a feeling I've messed up my PC permanently by doing the darn XP3
update. I shoulda known better!

I did - my warranty with Dell has expired, so now I can PAY for someone to
fix the problem. Ack!

I believe you are mistaken.

Somewhere else in this thread you mentioned having a Dell. Visit Dell's
support site, downloads section and enter the model of your dell computer to
find the latest Sound Casrd/other drivers for your device. Free.

I'm not good at all with DOS commands (feels like typing with my nose while
blindfolded).

Tell me how to discern if processes are running? Thank you.
PS I know to push F8 upon startup to get into DOS - it's that next step I'm
clueless about.

Thanks. Did this and got reply that my driver is up to date. However, I
noticed an update created just Friday 10/3, and so I wonder if this
bug/conflict/problem is just now being addressed.

Task Manager or Process Explorer (both of which are windows utilities)
Task Manager is part of XP which you start with ctrl-alt-del.
I got Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com. The URL is probably
different now since MS bought them. But, never fear, you can always find
the program by searching the internet.
