Lockups & Crashes, Too

I am also having lockups and crashes that seem to revolve around the fact
that XP has assigned all of my PCI devices to IRQ 5. My motherboard is
arguably outdated, as it does not have the capability to disable ACPI, which
was a suggestion given in a Creative Labs KB document (the problem started
with a malfunction of a SoundBlaster PCI sound card). Any suggestions, short
of getting a new motherboard/chip, etc? (Plan to do that soon but in the
meantime, I need a machine that doesn't die every ten minutes!!!) Is there a
way to manually assign different IRQs to devices?

Change the IRQ of an installed PCI card by changing its slot location on the
M/B. Creative SoundBlaster Live Cards seem to favor the middle of the 5
available slots if I remember correctly. I don't know about their newer
models though.

What exactly makes you think it has anything to do with your IRQ
assignments? It is completely normal, indeed advantageous, for XP (and
its NT-based predecessors) to share interrupts - sometimes six or seven
on one IRQ.

I'm pretty sure your problem has nothing to do with IRQ assignments, and
much more to do with poor 3rd party drivers. Also poor hardware (e.g.
RAM) can cause these problems, as can an overheating CPU (heatsink
covered with dust).
