Lockup at start

Running a Dell Dimension with windows xp pro. When machine is started it
comes to the Dell screen and the bar advances so far and then it locks and
will go no further. If I hold the start button until machine turns off and
then restart it boots up with no problem. Have cleaned all adware and
spyware and it is virus free. Have looked at startup but nothing is running
to cause this problem. DFoes anyone have any ideas as to what might be
causing this problem. Thanks!

This is often caused by a failing power supply. Try swapping it out for
a known working one. If that solves the issue, a new power supply is a
quick and reasonably inexpensive fix.
