XP Pro slow starting

Joseph Childs

I have xp pro on my Dell desktop computer and recently the startup time has
increased fourfold and programs start after a delay. This was one of the
fastest desktops that I have ever worked on before this problem. I have done
a virus check, cleaned out spyware, eliminated .tmp files, defraged the hard
disc and run three registry cleanup programs. Nothing has improved the
computer performance. Can I reinstal xp pro to solve this problem. There are
no games on this computer. It is used exclusively for administrative tasks
and rarely has contact with the internet. Although, there is an antivirus
program and firewall program installed.

Joseph, do you have any CD or Dvd Media in the Optical Drives? What
Registry Cleaners did you use? What Spyware programs?

Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.
It might help you determine what is slowing down your PC.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

Messing with Registry Cleaner was unwise!

A Registry Cleaner should not be used:
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Have you tried this approach?

Hope this helps.

Joseph,
What has changed, that is, what new hardware, new software, new drivers?

Is a System Restore to a time when all was OK a feasability?
