Locked workbook...

Hi I have a workbook with 6 sheets. 3 sheets are spreadsheets and the
other 3 are somewhat complicated charts. While editing one of the charts
recently (I was adding data to the charts) I received an exception error
and the program exited. When I tried to open the workbook I got a
message that the workbook was locked and that I could only open it for
Read-only. Is there an easier solution than to open as Read-only, save
to another filename and delete the original one?

Also, how do I prevent this from happening the next time that I try to
edit the charts?

I have a 933MHz P3 with 512MB RAM, 40GB HD and running Win98SE.

TIA,
GHB

One possible cause.......

Excel stores in Windows\Temp(win98) folder a copy(s) of any file
that is open.

Sometimes this *.tmp file is not deleted from the Temp folder when
you close out Excel(maybe a crash of Excel?) or the file, so Excel
thinks it is still open and locked for editing.

You can try a re-boot and see if that clears it up. If not, after a
re-boot, clear out your Windows\Temp folder.

If using WinXP your Temp folder would be under user.......

Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp

If on a network, re-booting the server may be the only solution.

I am not sure what the reason is, but what you can try is, go to task
manager and end any excel process running. (make sure you close all the
excel files before you do that). Hope it solves your problem

thanks
