Lock form without locking TOC

Hello,

I created a form with form fields and checkboxes. The form operates great
locked and unlocked. I added a table of contents because it is 17 pages long
and was easier than scrolling through the document to get to certain
sections. However, when I lock the form the Table of Contents does not work.
I keep clicking on it and nothing happens but if I unlock it, it works fine
and when I open the document I do click on Enable Macros.

I know there has to be a way to lock this form and still use the TOC but I
can't seem to figure it out.

Any help would be most appreciated!!

To protect only part of the document, you need to separate the different
parts of the document by section breaks (Insert > Break - select Continuous
if you want to prevent page breaks). In your case, insert the section break
after the TOC. When protecting the document for forms, you need to specify
which sections to protect. In Word 2003, the following procedure will work
(the procedure depends on the version of Word):

1. Select Tools > Protect Document to open the Protect Document task pane.

2. Check the check box below Editing restrictions.

3. In the field below the check box, select "Filling in Forms".

4. Since your document has more than one section, a "Select sections" option
appears. Click it to open the "Section Protection" dialog box. Make sure that
only the sections you want to protect have a check mark and click OK.

Now you can turn on protection and only the selected sections will be
protected.

If the TOC refers to headings in the protected section(s), I suppose the
headings are normal text and not text form fields. This means that you cannot
jump to the heading itself when clicking an item in the TOC since the text
will be locked. The selection will instead be in the first form field after
the heading – which I think is OK. If not, you will need to put each heading
in a separate section (section break before and after) and make sure that the
"heading sections" are set to be unprotected.

By the way, I don't understand that you tell your form works in both
protected and unprotected mode. You cannot fill in check boxes in unprotected
mode. It may seem as if you can fill in text form fields but if you turn on
form field shading, you will see that your text does not go into the fields.
Instead, the fields are replaced by the text you enter, i.e. the fields are
gone.
