location of autochk.exe

Hi there

A Windows XP machine I am working on is corrupted with an
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME blue screen stopping me from booting. I am
trying to perform a chkdsk from the recovery console. But since I can't read
the C: (bootable partition) file system I can't locate the autochk.exe file when
prompted.

My question is, from the recovery console, can I use a floppy disk with
autochk.exe loaded on the disk (from a different XP install) and point it to
the location a:\autochk.exe?

Or what other way is recommended?

Thank you very much for any advice.

Yes, I am in the middle of doing this. The problem is that to resolve it you
need to run chkdsk, and that requires having access to the autochk.exe file
which I am not able to locate. Hence trying to access it through the floppy
disk.

Thanks again

Hi

autochk.exe is in the windows\system32 folder. Try typing the full path to
that file in the Recovery Console.

yeah, this I tried as well. The problem is that the C: drive isn't readable, for
example, I can't use the 'DIR' command on C:

This is the reason I need to run a chkdsk on the drive, to mark all the bad
sectors. So I am thinking that the best way to locate the autochk.exe file is
to put it on a floppy drive and point chkdsk to a:\autochk.exe when it
prompts for the location.

Thanks again
