Local Profile- How do I keep it???

T

Tim

So I'm doing a small NT4.0-2003 domain migration this
weekend. Right now all my users have their favorites,
some custom desktop icons, Outlook (with local PST), and
printers setup under their local profile. Is there
anyway I can make this stick? Our current domain is
X_Y_Z and our new domain name will be XYZ. Currently all
these settings are under:

c:\documents and settings\jsmith

When I did a test bed to 2003 and logged into the "new"
domain the folder that was created on SOME occasions was:

c:\documents and settings\jsmith.XYZ

Great now I have to reset passwords, logonto every system
as the individual, recreate printers, icons, setup
Outlook and import everything from their old local
profile. Any way around this? Thanks.

You have got several options...

First, you can copy the old profile (listed is unknow account) to the
new profile using system properties in control panel

Second you can "point" the new user to the old profile using the
moveuser utiliy from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
(downloadable from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&DisplayLang=en

Or you can "point" the new user to the old profile manually by
following the below steps

1. After changing the domain, log on as local administrator

2. Make sure explorer is configured to display hidden files and system
files as well as well known file extensions

3. Start regedt32 and open (load hive) ntuser.dat for the old profile

4. Set full controll permissions for the new domain user to this hive

5. Unload the hive

6. goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Browse the ProfileImagePath values until you find c:\documents and
settings\username.domain
Change to c:\documents and settings\username

Set Full controll permissions for the new user to this folder (replace
to downlevel folders

Third, when migrating computer accounts you can use ADMT for this
which installs an agent on the computers that perform the domain join
