Local Computer Policy (gpedit.msc) Failure

L

Linda W

I tried using this snapin last week (I've used it
before), and I get an error/failure:

Snap-in Creation Failed:

The snap-in is not created, it may not be installed
properly.

Name: Group Policy

CLSID:{8fC0B73-a0e1-11d1-a7d3-0000f87571e3}

----------

Had to type in the error message manually, as cut/paste
is not available on the msc console.

I peeked in the reg at the clsid and it has some pointer
to gpedit.dll which exists and is valid -- I checked
it against the copy on the install disk, but something
else is preventing it from running.

Any ideas on how to correct this. The MS knowledge base
has no knowledge (!) of this error.

Sorta annoying, as I do use features in this snapin.
No other snapins seem to be affected, and no log messages
seem to be generated when the failure occurs.

Any idea of how to correct this would be very
appreciated...

thanks,
linda

Unregister then reregister the gpedit.dll file.
To do this, type these at a command prompt.
First, "regsvr32 /u gpedit.dll"
then, "regsvr32 gpedit.dll"

Bingo. I searched ms support for "snap-in...", the error message, but the
page you referenced didn't come up in the search. I probably should have
googled for it -- I've heard it's better at finding ms error messages on
microsoft's web site than their own search engine. Sigh.

Thanks for the pointer -- never would have found that one...and I don't
remember removing that path component...sigh...
