Local Area Network Malfunctions

My brother and I each possess a Windows XP Service Pack II computer, which
are networked, his being the server and providing a shared connection. Both
of us also have shared directories. Despite the network's considerable
benefits, primarily in entertainment, intermittently:

1. Both or one of either of the computers' shared directory Network Places
shortcuts cease to exist.

2. Both or one of the computers cease to register in the workgroup
computers lists of both or one of our computers.

3. Whenever I attempt to access files via Internet Explorer while using the
shared connection, the computer believes that no such connection is
currently active and, instead, attempts to connect to the Internet, which is
always futile, as the domicile only possesses one telephone line.

I am substantially displeased by this, especially considering my conjecture
that the service pack is defective. I have even heard negative comments on
it. Perhaps the claims of Microsoft's software flaws being considerably
more common compared to those of a majority of other major companies are
true after all.

Your network is probably faulty. Search for his computer (which will also force Windows to discover all computers on the network) or wait a few minutes and it will fix itself.

Check cabling and update network card drivers. Monitor the connection and see which one is generating errors.

[DAVID CANDY] Your network is probably faulty.

[COMPU-PIKACHU] This is extremely improbable. Please elucidate.

[DAVID CANDY] Search for his computer (which will also force Windows to
discover all computers on the network), or wait a few minutes and it will
fix itself.

[COMPU-PIKACHU] The Add Network Place Wizard is already used to temporarily
rectify the shortcuts' ceased existences. In addition, I was aware that
waiting would remedy both malfunctions.

[DAVID CANDY] Check cabling . . .

[COMPU-PIKACHU] Only one cable is used, which has never been damaged nor
disconnected.

[DAVID CANDY] . . . and update network card drivers.

[COMPU-PIKACHU] The hardware has never been changed, nor had the
malfunctions ever been experienced prior to upgrading Windows XP to Service
Pack II.

[DAVID CANDY] Monitor the connection . . .

[COMPU-PIKACHU] Although this probably shall not assist in rectifying the
malfunctions, how? I am not even familiar with any such capability.

It has been approximately two days, and a response has yet to be received.
Would this be due to the frequency of messages here?

I had the same problem my internet service said that it was the windows
service pack problem not an internet problem and suggested I delete it until
the pack was edited after that I didn't have any problems were you able to
get any solutions.

Have you tried make 1 of the computers a dedicated server with 2 network
ports in it and running the network setup wizard on it alowing others to
connect to the internet through the computer, then run the network setup
wizard on other pc stating it connects through a local gateway?

This set up will be a lot simpler is you disconnect the PCs from each other
and get an Internet Broadband router/gateway.
