Did you Right click the Start Button and select Properties then on the
taskbar and Start Menu Properties Under Taskbar Tab click on Customize Button
opposite this:
[ ] Hide inactive icons [ Customize...]
There Highlight the Local Area Network Icon and select from the drop down
list Always Hide.

You need just to apply it onto the Local network, nothing else!.
If other Icons you want it to show Just change the Drop down for Always Show
to that specific Icon not all.

That will require the uninstalltion of your NIC, so what the Difference from
your Other computer and the state you achieved now on this Machine = the same
on both PCs the Icon is Hidden not removed!.
The Icon does not occupy or take much space from your Disk at all.
HTH.

NIC = stand for Network Interface Card, and you are Right you don't need to
remove because you will not be able to connect to the Internet.
Did the Always Hide on the Taskbar did help?, or you still can see the Icon
on the Notification Area?.
