This may not be so in your case, but when I was plagued
by annoying pop-up messages about unplugged local area
network cables when nothing was wrong, I tried what my
ISP suggested - that I simply switch off PC and broadband
modem, wait a few minutes, switch modem back on, allow
all lights to stabilize, then switch on PC (you may need
to go into the modem's IP and press connect). It worked -
no more confounded intermittent pop-up messages.

Hi All,
I recently formatted my HD & returned everything to
factory settings. I have AOL 9 & broadband & when I
installed the broadband a new Local area network
connection 2 appeared, so I firewalled it with the XP
firewall. but occasionally my task bar gains an icon &
says network connection 2 unplugged, but when I click on
this for more information, it has a red cross, but this
soon disappears & rights itself. Also whilst this happens
a icon on my task bar with 2 green arrows starts flashing
yellow. This icon is my broadband icon, but I don`t
understand why it flases yellow at times?

I believe you may find that the icon with yellow downloading arrows is perhaps Windows Update attempting to download critical updates. At least you might wish to explore this possibility.
The Windows Update icon is a globe with the MS Windows emblem in the
upper left corner, not anything with yellow arrows.
