LNE100TX - 10/100 LAN Card but only at 10mbps

Question is, why does XP only allow this card to operate at 10 mpbs when its
supposed to be 100?

I have contacted Linksys (below is the exchange of questions and answers)
and please note it's an XP driver ...
Read from bottom up please (n.b. I inadvertently used "router" when I meant
"switch") however it was the swich LED's which first aleted me to the
low-speed problem.


THIRD QUESTION - (no reply as yet)

Marcelino, I changed the Connection setting to 100baseTX full duplex,
resulted in no connection.
Re-booted, still no connection. Device Manager showed the card with
exclamation mark, and not functioning. Restored the setting to AutoDetect,
it's now working again, but still only at 10mbps.

I have a laptop with 10/100 LAN. The router LED's shows this working at
100mbps on the same modem, so I believe the cable modem is not restricted.
(The router LED's show this pc at only 10).

Both pc and laptop are XPHome/SP2 fully updated.

Is there anything else to try, to rectify this?

Thank you for contacting Linksys Customer Support.

So there is no link speed option on the configure tab. Go to the connection
type and set the settings to 100base TX full duplex. Try to set this setting
and check if the adapter would run at a 100 mbps. Cause if it will still run
at 10 mbps. There is a possibility that the modem is transmitting 10 mbps
only. You can try to get in touch with your ISP (internet service provider)
if they provided the modem.

SECOND QUESTION.

Thanks for your reply. Checked card setting (in XP, right-click on Local
Area Connection, then select Status) and yes, the card is set at 10mps, as
you thought might be the case.
On the "Configure" tab there are 3 settings, none of which are "link speed".
"Burst Length" is 16DWORDS (possible settings, 1/2/4/8/16 or 32DWORDS)
"Connection Type" is Auto Detect (possible settings 100base TX, 100base TX
full duplex, 10base T, 10base T full duplex, autodetect)
"Transmit Threshold" is 256 Bytes (possiible settings, 36 / 72 / 96 / 160 /
256 bytes, or Store and Forward.

Driver - is said to be Microsoft 01/07/2001version 4.56.16.0, but selecting
"driver detail", and it reports lne100tx.sys from linksys, version 4.55.

Your other suggestions - regret can't try the card in another pc, don't have
one.

I'm reporting what I see (don't understand it). How do I get this card to
operate at 100mps, please?

FIRST ANSWER

Dear Len Dolby ,

Thank you for contacting Linksys Customer Support.

There is no need to update the driver for the device since this device is
auto senssing adapter. Have you try to use a diffrent computer or adapter
and check if it would run at 100mbps. You can try to check if the adapter
settings cause there is a possibility that it is set to run at 10 mbps. To
check the card setting s go to control pannel>network connection>right click
on the local area connection select properties. After going to the
properties click on configure and co to advance look for link speed and
check if it set to auto or 10 mbps only.


FIRST QUESTION TO LINKSYS -

Product : LNE100TX - EtherFast® 10/100 LAN Card
This card is working (with cable modem) in XP with Microsoft driver BUT
only at 10mbs, not 100. Been to Downloads for driver but am unsure which,
since none of the chip ID's fully match. Chip is PNIC, other marks
LC82C168, 9721, AH8671.1. For XP, which driver do I need please to get it
to function at 100mbs?

Further comment - worked fine, till I set up a switch/router and network
with a
laptop with 10/100 ethernet card., since which I cannot get this card to
network correctly. Hence, thought I might need your driver.

Relevance of the post
1/ I need a second LAN card to set up a shared internet connection between
2 pc's (with crossover cable rather than router).

2/ When I originally got NTL cable modem (3 years ago), bought a brand-new
LAN card which just would not work in XP, either by autodetect or with
card's driver disk. This "old" LAN card does work. Am therefore doubly
concerned not only about "mis-match" cards, but also mis-match speed,
assuming the potential new card is also 10/100TX and works at 100

3/ Assuming mis-match speed cards do work - which for the modem and which
for the connection to second pc? (what's the most efficient use of speed?)
This question ONLY if experts do not sort out current card limitation.

I wouldn't worry about the 10/100 thing. As the Linksys tech says,
these cards are auto-sensing, which means they will automatically
detect the fastest speed possible. Even running at 10Mb/s the card will
not cause a bottleneck for your internet connection which is probably
1Mb/s or less

Lan card, BUT - can I find a "switched pair" or "crossover" cable, in their
cable section? Only thing I can find is an "assembled RJ45 CAT 5" cable -
is that the same thing? (why can't terminology be standardised!!)

No. Standard Cat 5 cables will not work PC to PC. A crossover cable
has one plug wired 'straight' and the other has 2 wire pairs 'crossed'

Actually, I have ran a Cat5 cable PC to PC with XP Pro on both machines
without problems...in fact, it recognized the network better than using
my ol' linksys here. The only reason I added a hub to the network is
because I now have a 3rd machine. So yes...a standard CAT5 cable can be
used from machine to machine...at least while using XP Pro.

Maybe one of your cards was "auto-sensing"? In other words, it auto
adjusts for the cable you use.
