Little red X's instead of pictures

I'm running Windows XP Pro and most pictures, images, etc, show up
like a champ. However, once in awhile I'll get an email from one of my
neices and her supposedly pictures are big blank squares with a little
red X in the upper left corner. I am using Microsoft Outlook for my
mail reader and have already gone to tools/options/security tab but
everything there is greyed out. Any help appreciated.

What the red x usually means is that XP can't find a way to display the
image. This could be because the image file is corrupt or because it is in a
format for which you do not have a graphics viewer. Assuming your niece is
sending you files that are all in the same format, if you can see some of
them, then the ones you can't see are corrupt. That could be caused by
problems on your niece's PC, say a virus or something else.

You might try searching on the web for IRFANVIEW.EXE, a free graphics viewer
that contains drivers for most of the available graphics formats. Download
and install it, and you then may be able to see the files your niece is
sending.

Is she sending from AOL? they tend to have their own formats (from what I
hear) in which case a google for the appropriate viewer might help or a
google for AOL and outlook and pictures.

Loading the Java Virtual Machine software solved that problem for me. You can get it free from the Java web site.
