LISTNUM

I realized that when I cut and pasted the LISTNUM data, Word picked up the
formatting for the List Number style from the paragraph marker and created a
List Number style where I pasted the LISTNUM field. This caused the new
number to automatically insert itself.

Make sure to copy the LISTNUM field, only, not a paragraph mark. This task
will be easier if you turn off the "Use smart paragraph selection" option in
Office button | Word Options, Advanced category.

You may also want to turn on nonprinting marks (Ctrl+Shift+8), to more
easily see what you are doing; paragraph marks display as ¶ symbols.
