List numbering

Ian

Running Word 97.

Help. I have screwed up list numbering styles, and I can't see what I
have done wrong.

In the good version of a template, list numbering works OK. There are
two relevant styles: ListNumber and ListNumber2. Numbering looks like
this:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.
2.
2.1.
2.2.
3.
4.
4.1.
4.2.
4.3.
etc
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In "tidying up" the template, I have somehow upset ListNumber2, so that
with the bad template the numbering now looks like this:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.
2.
1.1.
1.2.
3.
4.
1.3.
1.4.
1.5.
etc
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Looking at the good and bad definitions for ListNumber2, they appear to
be identical in almost all respects. In particular, in both cases, level
2 numbering starts at 1, and the box "Restart numbering after higher
list level" is checked.

There are just two differences I can see between the good template and
the bad template:

1. In Format > Style > ListNumber2, in the good template, the
description does not contain the words "Outline numbered", whereas in
the bad template these words are included (I don't know how they got
there).

2. In Format > Bullets and Numbering > Outline Numbered, in the good
template, the "Continue previous list" radio button is selected (and
there is the option to select "Restart Numbering" if required). In the
bad template, the "Restart Numbering" button is selected, but both
buttons are grayed out, so I cannot change the selection.

Any ideas on how I can turn bad into good?

P.S. I have tried copying the ListNumber and ListNumber2 styles from the
good template to NORMAL.DOT, and then from NORMAL.DOT to the bad
template, but the problem still remains in the bad template. (And it is
also bad now in NORMAL.DOT).

Hi Ian

See
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

That page is written about Word's heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2 etc).
But you can apply the same principles to the List Number styles (List
Number, List Number 2 etc).

Word's numbering has improved with each successive version. That also means
it has become more forgiving. But with Word 97, there is no room for error
and you have to follow the instructions *exactly*.

In particular,
1. When you get to the Bullets and Numbering dialog, on the Outline
Numbering tab, click within each pane, and then click Reset.
2. Do not, under any circumstances, try to format your numbering when yoru
cursor is in a List Number 2 paragraph. You must always start with your
cursor in a List Number paragraph. (This is almost certainly what has caused
your pain in this case.)

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna. That information was very clear and helpful. Many thanks.

However, I decided that life wasn't long enough to redefine all the
styles in the template (especially on a Sunday afternoon!), so I tried
copying *all* the styles from the good template to the bad one (not just
the ListNumber styles that were causing the problems). That did the
trick.
