Linux or Windows?

I have a search form on my website (Search this site for).
According to the comparison chart on godaddy - Linux vs Windows - I would
need to publish my site on a Linux platform in order to make the search form
work.

Earlier today, somebody on this forum asked if he/she can use a Linux host
server for a FP website.

The answer was, "Yes you can, providing the site doesn't use any features
that are windows server dependent such as asp. "

I use a dynamic web template, a custom link bar, page transition, and I have
a top 10 list.
Are these Windows server dependent features?
What is "asp?"

I am as always thankful for any tips and answers.

The top 10 list may be the only non-functional piece. The page transition
isn't Windows specific, but only IE users will see it.

ASP stands for Active Server Pages. It's a platform for generating dynamic
content on the server, such as a grid of rows from a database or sending a
form to a database.

You may want to find another host other than GoDaddy though. If you look
back through the newsgroup you can see a lot of issues with GoDaddy customer
support being less than helpful to downright incorrect.

Hope this helps,

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your response!

Do you have any suggestions in regards to another host besides GoDaddy?

I am sure I could find find a host that claims to provide excellent customer
support and FP Server Extensions working properly.

But maybe you or somebody else here on this forum has god experience with a
particular host?

Hi Mark,

I did some research yesterday on possible web hosts.
I am, however, not quite sure what to look for.
Again, I use a DWT, have a custom link bar, page transition, a paypal
shopping cart, a top 10 list, and a search form.
What features must a future web host have so that all of these components
(including the top 10 list) work?

And is it just godaddy specific that I would need to publish my website on a
Linux platform in order to make the search form work or do I need Linux
regardless what web host I choose?

To use the Top Ten List you must use a Windows Server, and not all hosts
support this feature.
To Use Search on a Windows server the host must also run the Indexing
Service, which can be a resource hog and many hosts do not allow this to
run. GoDaddy does not allow Indexing Service.

Unix/Linux servers use a different method for search which uses less
resources, so most Unix hosts allow search, but Unix is unable to
provide the Top Ten feature.

Custom Link bars require FrontPage 2002 extensions, many Unix hosts are
removing extensions from their servers.

If you edit your site on your PC and Publish, then DWTs will work on any
server, with or without extensions. If you edit Live (not recommended)
then you must be on a Windows Server with FP2002 extensions with all the
available updates and patches.

Page transitions are browser dependant - all your users must use
Internet Explorer, and have Transitions allowed in the browser set up -
I disallow page transitions since I want to see the page content, not
special effects.

PayPal with work with any server.
