You could also try Kanotix (excellent hardware detection ~ 700Mb) and Damn
Small Linux (great for older PCs ~ 50Mb) - both of which run from CD not
DVD; quicker to download, burn and run (hopefully!).

Knoppix fits on a CD. It's bootable and also has a good compliment of
drivers and applications.

Tried several and had no luck at all on my machine.
Then I D\loaded `pclinuxos`, burned it to disc, and it booted
first time.

What distribution are you using? Are you confusing boot with POST? What
exactly happens, you've given very vague details.

i have several copies of knoppix live CD

and I love'em, they are great fun when you just wants something new to
look at.

there are so many live cd's out there, i've tried about 3 different
ones, never the damn small one...knoppix did so well, i just settled on
that one.

Have you ever heard of or used, ipcop? .org?

it's a homemade firewall, designed to run on near bout any old pc
pop two ethernet card in, you create a red card and a green card
the red card of course is the intake from the net.

I used to get my machines hacked at least 2wice a week (even with xp
firewall)
ALL OF EM someone was breaking in...
till i put up the ipcop, it has never never broken down (the ipcop box)

its a linux kernel...it has extensive admin gui, it's an excellent home
project.

no i know what boot means, it loads up the drivers of the os etc

Have you asked in alt.os.linux.ubuntu yet? Make sure to include as much
information when you post there as possible. Overkill is a good thing in
this situation, such as what the last message is on the screen and your
exact hardware profile.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my

hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone

sorry to miss the original question

it all depends on what the mbr says.
you can clear the mbr, by going to microsoft and query that
clear mbr, it's a dos function...it is the 4mb that nobody touches
anytime, cept bill gates.

(as an option) there are several linux boot loaders, it's where you
burn and image
to a 3.5 disk. it load the basic kernel, and gives you cd access.

you can also have multiple boot mbr, there is a linux tool just to
manage this.

I've done all these things, but not recently, I post this, just to
confirm the idea it can be done.

the point is that everytime i burn mandrake, it also works first time
now this image file is also off a magazine, so therefore no reason to
question their sincerity in delivering the goods. i have tried to download
the same file, but still the same results

DVD's are not 100% bootable
sometimes its the ROM itself that doesn't support booting
better to use CD's

Why not try Damn Small Linux - it is only a 50Mb d/l so is do-able even on
dialup. If nothing else, it would prove that your PC can boot from CD-ROM.

Oh, well, so much for that disto. It doesn't recognize my Uli ethernet
controller on the mb. Debian does.
