Linksys WRT54GL and Remote Desktop

Tom Scales

I'm having a problem and can't figure it out. I've done this before, so I
know the steps.

Remote desktop works fine within my house. I want to use it from outside,
so I opened up 3389 and forwarded it to the proper machine. Made sure the
Windows Firewall let 3389 through (and tried it with the firewall off).
Running AVG as my anti-virus, so no other firewall installed.

I can ping the machine from outside the house. I cannot connect to the
machine with either RealVNC (proper port forwarded) or Remote Desktop.

It worked fine on my older WRT54G, but this WRT54GL doesn't seem to like it.

Anything obvious I am missing?

Thanks,

Tom

What happens if you go to the http://www.canyouseeme.org test site while
logged on to the PC you want to remotely access/control? Also check the XP
SP2 Windows Firewall exception for Remote Desktop. Its possible the address
scope is configure for your local subnet versus any IP on the internet.

Port 3389 is properly configured for any access. canyouseeme works and says
it can see my service at 3389.

I'm stumped.

Have you checked the event viewer for clues then?

Good suggestion, but I just cleared all the logs and tried again. Nothing
gets entered on either machine. I just don't think it is getting to the
machine and I, for the life of me, can't figure out why!

What is the error message(s) when you try to connect from a remote location?

Have you tried a power reset on the router, ie. unplug the power cord, wait
10 seconds then plug power back in? It also possible a reset back to factory
defaults or reflash of the router firmware may fix this...

Since you already have a firewall (the Linksys), Windows Firewall is going
to be a waste of resources.

You cannot ping the machine from outside the house. You can ping the router
from outside the house.

It sounds like port forwarding isn't set up right are you forwarding from
and to the correct port? Forwarding to the correct host? Double check to
make sure everything's filled out right there.

I wouldn't suggest using the WRT54G, it only has 2MB Flash and 4MB of RAM so
the routing table fills up and wedges the stupid thing whenever you get
more than a couple people actively browsing on the network. The GL has 4MB
of flash 8MB of RAM and the GS 8MB of flash and 16 MB of RAM. Otherwise
they're identical in every respect.

Hi
How did you try the outside connection?

Did you actually tried from another location, or you tried from within you
LAN using your External IP.

Many Entry Level Routers do not let you go Out and back In through the same
conduit, and you have actually to try it from the outside.

BTW. The WRT54GL is like the WRT54G v1-4. It has the bigger memory.
