All links in Help for my Windows XP Home are not working. Whenever I click on
either related topics or other links, I got only another notepad icon in
notes and that's it/
Please, help?!

Hi Ramesh,

I did both things that were recommended - regsrv and downloading, but it did
not help. The problem still stays the same

Elvart,

What's the Service Pack level of your computer? Have you read the SP2 part
of that page? The update referred at the bottom of the page does not apply
if you're already using XP SP2 (indicated in that page itself)

Yes, I did exactly that
Actually, I do not understand , what does it mean to set that active
acontrols to kill-bit. What can I do know to correct the problem?

Elvart,

My general advice is that you install SP2 (not for this particular problem
but my general advice), as it has many security enhancements.

To verify if an ActiveX Control is set the Kill-bit, open Regedit.exe and
navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
Compatibility\{GUID}

See if the "Compatibility Flags" value is set to 400, in the right-pane. If
so, that control is blocked for security purposes.

Where the {GUID}entries for Help Control are:

{ADB880A6-D8FF-11CF-9377-00AA003B7A11}
{41B23C28-488E-4E5C-ACE2-BB0BBABE99E8}

To remove the Kill-bit, backup the particular registry key and delete the
"Compatibility Flags" value. Restart Help and Support Center.

Thanks so much Ramesh!
Everything is back to normal. Also, I would like you to know that this
action corrected another annoyance I had. Before I, when I move pointer onto
icons in a right area of a taskbar, the hints were displayed behind the
taskbar, so only part of them was visible. Now this is OK too.

Elvart,

You're welcome. The other problem that you stated occurs in random (a known
bug in Windows XP), and the usual fix is to log off and log back in.

Ramesh, the problem I have is that though I can open Help from the Start
menu, and display the suggestions, when I click on the suggestions I get a
box with a red cross in it and the message 'Page cannot be displayed'. I've
tried to download the Q patch you suggested but when I did I was told that
this would replace a more up to date patch already on my system. This
problem with Help only started recently, and I now have an extra problem
which I only discovered this morning. If I go into User Accounts and click
on any of the Help subjects on the right hand side of the screen I'm told
Internet Explorer Script Error Object Expected Code O. Are the two things
connected, and have you any idea what can I do about it?

Try clearing the TIF and TEMP folders.

Clear the Temporary Internet Files
-----------------------------------

Close all Internet Explorer windows
Type INETCPL.CPL in Start, Run dialog
Click the Delete Files button
Select Delete all offline content and click OK
Click OK to close the dialog

Clear the contents of the TEMP folder
---------------------------------------
Type %TEMP% in Start, Run dialog
Select all files in the Temp folder and delete them
Some files in the TEMP folder may be in use. If so, ignore the error and
continue deleting the remaining files in that folder.

Tried those two things, Ramesh, but it's still the same. I get the message
'Page cannot be displayed when I click on any of the links within the
suggestion Help comes up with, and the left hand side of the screen which
gives suggestions for user accounts still bring up the message Internet
Explorer Script Error Object expected.

bbsmallkid180,

Wondering if this is caused by the security settings for the local machine
zone. BTW, does this problem occur if you create a new profile?

OK, I've just created a new user account and guess what? The Help links work
perfectly in the new account, and the user accounts help links work, too!
Can you explain why this has happened and whether there's anything I can do
to get my 'old' user account working? It's great to have all the links
working in the new user account but transfering all my documents over would
be a marathon and a half though I'll do it if I have to. Oh, and many, many
thanks for helping me like this. I'm sure you must have much more fun things
to do than help out an idiot techie!

I'd compare the local zone security settings with that of a new user
profile.

Login to the new user account, and type this in Start, Run:

REG EXPORT "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0" C:\NEW.REG

Then, login to your user profile (old), and type this:
REG EXPORT "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0" C:\OLD.REG

Then, load Windiff.exe from Start, Run and compare the two files (Old.reg
and New.reg).

This old thread applies to me, but I tried following your steps to find the
Active X and could not find it. I am not a technology expert whatsoever. I
have SP2, and am set to update automatically. I have been uninstalling
programs recently put into my system, etc...If I can't do this myself I am
not sure what to do.

If I can't do this myself I am not sure what to do.

Certain updates from Microsoft set "Kill-bit" for the Help HTML ActiveX
control, thereby preventing it from loading. This results in the blank Help
and Support Center Index.

Help and Support Center Index is blank with a Red X mark:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/helpctrindex.htm

How to help protect against the Internet Explorer Click and Scroll security
issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888534

Only way to resolve the problem is to remove the "Kill-bit" as discussed in
the above page, but that UNDOes the security update you installed.
