Links in Favorites no longer show site specific icons

M

Matt

Like the title says, I'm not sure exactly what I have
done, but now none of the links in my Favorites folders
will show site specific icons (like the Y! for Yahoo). The
icon it does show is the Internet Explorer "e" on a white
background. Also, all of the links must have ".url" after
them, or they will not link to the site. I think it may
have something to do with which program now opens those
links. I think it is set on Internet Explorer. Anyway, I
don't know much about this sort of thing, so hopefully
someone out there has seen this and can tell me how to fix
it.

Thanks,

Matt

I think this is a known bug cos I had the same problem
and it occurs when you do not have a drive identified C:
attached so have a go and try and get the computer to
label one of your drives (CD-ROM, ZIP or Hard drive as
C:, I added a flash disk reader for a digital camera and
that solved it

This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico
(Favorite Icons)
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your
favorites with the
stored icons.

FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons (Line 108)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
------------------------------------------------
These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they
normally will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp
files are cleared.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favo
rg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save
them permanently
in a different folder and re-associate your favorites
with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are
stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9883,00.asp

You can also try FavIoncizer, here:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?
target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a
third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but
lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended.

Thank you for the reply, but i do have a drive labeled C:.
Also, this has only occured since I was organizing them. I
have not seen this icon before, nor have I had to
have ".url" after each link. I do appreciate the help,
though.

That is normal.
Favicons are only temporary until cleared from your cache.
To make them permanent:

I don't think I am explaining things very well. The icon
is not the same one that internet explorer assigns to
links without special icons. All of my links now have
icons that feature a tine Internet Explorer "e", in blue,
on what looks like a blank white page. Also, I have never
had to have ".url" after every link before. Apparently, I
did something I did not intend to do while organizing the
links. Is there a limit on the number of links? (have I
put in too many, so that it puts the same icon on each
one?). Anyway, thank you for replying so quickly.

It is not a bug. The Favicon has expired out of your Temporary Internet
Files.

1. the 'e-paper' is default icon. it appears if favicon
is not used. about 1 in 20 sites will have favicon.
sites with favicon will be recent technology sites or
sites that want them.

2. after you save the favicon-site to your links list you
should see the favicon. after you remove/delete the temp
internet file the 'e-paper' icon will appear.

3. you can search your temp internet file for the favicon
and copy it to a personal icon folder. then use
properties of link item to lock-in the favicon. hint get
the program 'favorg' to do this.

4. you can have as many favorites/links as you want. my
second top toolbar is 16 links across screen with 10 plus
sublinks each. these sublinks are either my folders
and/or sites from worldwide. half of these links have
favicons re-assigned from my 'favorg' folder.

5. the url is only shown in the link site properties.
it should not be visible in the links listing.
