When I save a web site to my Favorites such as Yahoo it does not save
the web page icon.

This is the same for Yahoo, Google.

It creates the link but the Y or G icon is not saved.

Guesses?

Hi,
Favicons are stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Newer files
eventually push them out (replace them.)

Here's the hands-on method of saving them.
Favicons are in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Search the TIF folder
periodically for *.ico Copy any icons you want to save to another folder.
Right-click the internet shortcut> properties> change icon. They'll be saved
then, even after newer files would have pushed them out of the TIF folder.

Or, Favorg is easy to use and is still available for free from
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm > line 108.
The favorg article is at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,108438,00.asp

FavIconizer from
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons is another
free program to save
favicons.

No need to really do that when you *notice* a "favicon" is being used.
Start>Find files or folders> type favicon. Remember to only *COPY* the
favicon from the folder, and to paste it into a storage/holding folder that
you will create solely for icons. Rename it what you want to as all will
have names like favicon(1). Again, don't cut it from the TIF's as you can
corrupt the Index.dat file if you do that.

To find the TIF's: Use Windows Explorer Explorer pane on the
left>Windows>Temporary Internet files>Content.IE5>sub-directories (have
random alpha-numeric names).

I guess I'm not understanding this. I can't even seem to find the Temp.
Internet Files. I usually delete them from I.E. Tools - Internet Options.
Should they be in C - Windows? Because there I find a Temp folder, but
nothing about temporary internet files.

I'm not sure where they are located in XP (which for some reason I presume
you are using) but I would think they are in the same location as W98se. In
W98 the Temporary internet files are in C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files.
Sometimes one will find Favicons in that location. However, most of the time
they are placed in directories in the C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 Folder. They will have random names like
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\10I0GCNV or
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\D4LLYPQK.

The Content.IE5 folder is "quasi-hidden" folder (not a true hidden folder),
but it will be found only by using either the Windows Explorer Explorer pane
or by doing a search. Start>Find> Files or Folders>Content.IE5. If you look
for it in the main Windows Explorer window, it will not be seen until you
*expand* the Temporary Internet Files folder in the Windows Explorer *Pane*.

That is why I said to use Start>Find> Files and Folders> favicon. It is much
easier to do so until you can navigate to the Content.IE5 folder as I have
described. Or use the Start>Find> Files or Folders> Content.IE5 to locate
*exactly* where it is on your system.

If you are using Windows XP, I think the Content.IE5 folder (and its
sub-folders) is located in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5.

Nonetheless, you needn't bother to access it directly - unless you simply
want to navigate your way through to actually see it. I also am not sure if
it is a true hidden folder in XP. If it is, you must enable "show all files"
by means of Folder Options. Path to that varies with the OS as well. Open
Windows Explorer>View menu>Folder Options>View tab> Show all files>Apply>OK
out.

LuckyStrike,

Since an IE user can move the TIF wherever he likes a more general
procedure is to start from the TIF viewer: Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V
That will put the complete path to the TIF in an Explorer Window's
Address bar. Then, as you say, you can append \Content.IE5\
to that and you will start to see the underlying implementation
of the TIF in the AutoSuggest dropdown.

Excellent Robert. Thanks for that. Natch, it didn't work for me until I
enabled auto-"suggest", which I generally don't use. But I just might leave
it enabled for awhile to become familiar with it again. ;-)

Question: Why would someone move the TIF's to another location rather than
default? Pros/ Cons?
Thanks.

It is very common for administrators to move it out of the user's profile,
especially when a "roaming profile" is being used. I used to put mine
in a different partition just to reduce fragmentation in the main partition.
Another possibility I have read of is putting it into a RAM disk (for speed
reasons but also to clear it automatically each time the machine is rebooted.)
I suppose with these new USB RAM disks you could have the benefit
of speed as well as not necessarily losing it each time the machine is
rebooted. Hmm... I have one of those doing nothing... I think I'll try that.

The only Con that I can think of is that you could confound remote
troubleshooters who might not consider the possibility that the TIF
wasn't in a subdirectory called Temporary Internet Files... <eg>

I could see that as being quite useful if one had a tendency to keep tons of
stuff in the TIF's.

Not in my field of expertise... <g> But, in my W98se, the "Empty TIF when
browser is closed" doesn't work. Not a real concern, but I just tried that
the other day for the first time and..... no workie. Would that be the
equivalent of the same "not losing it" thing? said:

Amusing play on the word Con. :-))
As well as those (like myself) who may not know where they are in an XP OS.
