I have two hewlett packard 7500,celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz,248 MB RAM with a
Lucent Win Modem. One computer is running Windows Xp home edition the other
Windows Xp Profesional. I have 2 phone jacks,1 jacks for the phone and both
computers are running through each other to the 2nd phone jack. When one
computer goes online the other cannot and vicer versa. And what is a direct
link cable, and possibly where is it plugged into eager to play online games
with other computer. Thanks For Support.

A direct link cable, i.e., cross-over cable, is what you're thinking of.
Just a standard network cable with several crossed lines, it would allow you
to create a "mini-network" between just two machines. However with the spec
machines what you have, I would strongly recommend going the full route - get
yourself a real network router and either a cable modem or DSL line. Problem
solved!
