modem to modem connection

Hani

hello,

i have three machines where one of them is running 98 and
the other two are running xp.

is there a way to use the modems on the mentioned
machines to establish a connection (xp to xp, or, 98 to
xp)?

would there have to be a server and a client? or is it a
peer to peer type of connection?

what software would be necessary?

can the two machines be connected directly using typical
phone cable (ie directly from modem to modem)? or would
two machines have to be plugged into different phone
jacks, where the client would have to dial the phone
number of the server?

please advise.

thank you in advance.

It isn't possible to make a direct modem-to-modem connection between
two computers.

If two computers have modems that are connected to different phone
lines, you can set up one as a dial-up client and the other one as a
dial-up server. The client would have to dial the phone number of the
server. The software is built into Windows 98 and XP. For
information on setting up a dial-up server, look at these Help
topics:

98: Dial-Up Server
XP: Incoming connections

A dial-up connection would tie up two phone lines and would transfer
data extremely slowly, with a maximum speed of 33,600 bits/second.

It would be much better to use an Ethernet connection, which can
transfer data thousands of times faster and doesn't require two phone
lines.
