XP Home Peer to Peer Internet Access via (1) Modem?

Tagman

I have 2 machines running XP Home SP2 - linked together via a wired Switch.
I am able to access shared files between the two machine.

Machine #1 has a modem for my dial-up internet.

Machine #2 does not have a modem.

Can I establish an internet connection on machine #1 and then use the same connection on machine #2 via the LAN to access the internet on the second machine?

From what I have read elsewhere - on a peer to peer network - each machine must have it's own modem - this can not be shared.

Just wanted to check and see if this was true - or is there a way to "bridge" ?

Thanks -

What you've read elsewhere - "each machine must have it's own modem" is wrong.

Using Internet Connection Sharing on Machine #1 will give you internet service
on Machine #2.

For some reason - I have never had success with the XP network wizards - I've had to configure my network manually to get it to work. I tried the wizard - nothing - so I'm assuming that I'll have to configure the modem access manually as well...

In any event, Following your link - I've confirm that the PC with the modem has 192.168.0.1 as the static IP address.
The computer w/o the modem has the static IP address of 192.168.0.3 and a default gateway of 102.168.0.1

I then opened the connections tab on internet options - there are not entries related to dial-up and virtual private network setting - and the never dial a connection bullet is selected (and grayed out).

Moving down to LAN settings - I cleared all 3 check boxes and exited.

Unable to obtain a web page.

Any thoughts on what I'm missing?

Thanks again!

Found my solution:

If your client can see your host machine but can't get out to the Internet you might try a ping test and then tell the client machine to use the host as DNS if you have not already.

Ping the host machine from start]run]cmd (or command). In the DOS window type: ping 192.168.0.1 or whatever your host machine is set. If you get a reply, it can see your host machine. NOW ping an external web site like this: ping www.yahoo.com -- if you get a reply, you should also be able to see it in your browser, if you don't, then ping the IP# directly, at this writing: ping 66.218.71.94. IF you NOW get a reply, you have a DNS thing to fix bud. You should also be able to see the site in your browser: http://66.218.71.94 should bring up yahoo.com

You should go to the DNS settings in your Network Properties and "Enable DNS" then type in the name of the host machine, leave domain blank, and add the IP number of your host machine, typically: 192.168.0.1.
